Most Health Partners Medicare plans will require you to get a referral from your primary care provider (PCP) before visiting a specialist.
This helps assure that your PCP is aware of all the medical care you’re getting. Your PCP is your partner in health, and a strong relationship with your PCP can help assure that you’re getting the right care at the right time. It can also help save you time and money when obtaining health care services that your PCP is able to provide.
Most PCPs transmit referrals to specialists electronically. Getting a referral simply means calling in to your PCP a few days in advance. Talk to your PCP now to see how his or her practice handles referral requests. It’s also a good idea to check with your specialist’s office a few days before your appointment to make sure that the referral has been received.
While our Prime plan serving Lancaster, Lehigh and Northampton counties does not have a referral requirement, we encourage all our members to keep their PCP informed about all their health issues and the health care services they receive.
